Can't remove highlighting

Wherever I click to on my document it highlights all the text upto that
point...even moving the cursors will increase/decrease the highlighting.

The only way I have found to stop this is to hold CTRL + click where I want
cursor, I can then freetype my text from there tho if I start using cursors
again it will start to use the highlighting again.

What am I doing wrong??

On the status bar is EXT black? If so, you have Extend Selection mode
enabled. Double-click to turn it off.
