Cant register DHCP client to DNS?

A

Anders Biro

It was my understanding that DHCP clients should automatically register
their IP to the DNS-server so the DNS-name always accurately reports the
proper IP-address.
However, lately I have noticed many discrepancies and when clients acquire
new IPs it is not reflected in the DNS. Explicit "ipconfig /renew" or even
"ipconfig /registerdns" does not seem to do a thing so what might the
problem be?

Does your DHCP server support dynamic updates?
If your DHCP server is W2k server you should have a forward lookup zone
and activate the option "Integrated in Active Directory".
Hope it helps!

Understand DNS Dynamic Updates in Windows Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 provides the dynamic update functionality. With the DNS update functionality, the DNS client computers register and update their resource records with a DNS server dynamically whenever changes occur. When you use this feature, you improve DNS administration by reducing the time that it requires to manually manage zone records. You can use the DNS update functionality with DHCP to update resource records when a computer's IP address is changed. Computers that are running Windows Server 2003 can send dynamic updates.

With Windows 2003 DNS servers, you can enable or disable the DNS update functionality on a per-zone basis at each server that is configured to load either a standard primary or directory-integrated zone.

We are running Win2003 and the integrated AD option is enabled.
However, the service is set to "secure update only" so I wonder if that is
the problem?
We all run XP clients and nothing else

OK, we run a Win2k3 server with the AD integrated option?
Should not dynamic update be enabled per default on servers and clients?
What settings lets you control this?

By the way, we run DNS and DHCP on the same DC... Is that asking for
trouble?
