Can't receive email

Hi - could someone please help with the following problem:

My email (Windows Mail) is very temperemental, most of the time refusing to
download new messages. I can send email/browse internet with no problem (so
it doesn't seem to be a connection problem), but receiving mail is very
difficult. I get 2 or 3 error messages appearing, the most common one is:

Account: 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk', Server: 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR [IN-USE] Unable to lock maildrop', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92.

and another one is:

Account: 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk', Server: 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: ' Disconnect because authentication to back server is too
long', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number:
0x800CCC92

My computer is quite new (year 2008), operating environment is Vista,
Antivirus programme is Windows Live OneCare, I have never had Norton
installed on this machine. If the culprit is the antivirus software, how
could it be that the software programmes from the same manufacturer are not
compatible with each other?

I turned off Virus and Spyware monitoring and Firewall within the Windows
Live OneCare, but that didn't help. I also shut down the email, and open it
up again, sometimes it helps and downloads new mail, but most of the time it
doesn't work. I also unplug the broadband box and plug it in again, and
again it occasionally helps, but not always. It is truly frustrating!!

Could somebody please advise what to do?
thank you!

The "ERR [IN-USE] Unable to lock maildrop" issue can happen if you
check your mail too frequently, so be sure the checking interval is at least
5 minutes.

The second error is indicative of a problem internal to the Wanadoo
mail server. The only thing that will cure that is to get a better quality
mail service provider.

I had exactly the same problem. Try this, it worked for me.

In the 'POP3' address box type 'pop.orangehome.co.uk' that should be
enough, however you can also put 'smtp.orangehome.co.uk' in the other box and
everything should be O.K.

If I were suspicious I would think that this was a way of making money from
calls to a helpline................?
