Can't read CD's only DVD's on DVD-ROM Drive.

I was wondering if anyone else is having the same issue that I am with their
optical drive. I can read "DVD" programs and not "CD" programs. All the discs
are legit copies, everything from games like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
DVD to WINXP Pro CD. I was shocked that the WINXP Pro CD wasn't readable; it
displayed the error that the disc wasn't formatted correctly. Did Vista
install a firmware driver that overrides the CD lens and not the DVD? I can't
even boot off the XP CD on startup past POST. Is anyone else having this
issue and is there a fix? I want to remove Vista and reinstall XP. I don't
have anything I want retain since this is primarly a test machine with
nothing on it.

Well, I've lost my CD drive completely.
They vanished from "Computer". They're recognized
by OS and being seen at the start, but are NOT
shown in the "Computer" window....

It happened after I tried to uninstall
Nero 6., which is incompatible with Vista Beta 2.

Yup, get the same thing - installed from DVD disk, now cannot read any
cd-roms. Have a Sony DW-Q58A in a Dell Inspiron. Can't even read Audio CDs.
