My computer at work was just reformated to Windows XP
(from Windows 98) and now I can't reach the msnbc.com web
site. I am using IE Version 6.0 SP1. Not having
problems with any other web sites, just msnbc.

Can anyone help?

Might be some host in the particular route you get stuck with using to
get to msnbc.com. Routes are not dynamic for users; if you can ping
there then you get stuck with that route. Your ISP may be able to help
to mark that route as defective and establish a different one.
Otherwise, try using something like the safe web browser at samspade.org
to see if you can to there. Or use Multiproxy with public proxies to
get there. Or use anonymizer.com's freebie but slow proxy to get there.
If you can there using a different route, it's likely that the one you
have from your domain goes through a host that is screwing up the HTTP
connection. Do a traceroute to see what hosts are in your path. If the
tech at your ISP can get there, compare traceroutes.

You sure your company isn't blocking that site with firewall rules or
content restriction software, like Websense? I know many companies who
restrict newsgroup access because they don't want their employees
wasting their time and company resources on non-work newsgroups. Some
companies will provide their own news server to limit what groups are
available. Some companies will restrict to where you can navigate. My
prior employer used Websense which categorized web sites and the
employer would subscribe to those categories they thought were
appropriate for employee's use. I could use anonymizer.com to get to a
tech web site that had mis-categorized (and Websense was never quick to
response to a request to reclassify a web site) until my company
included an unsubscribe category that prevent me getting to
anonymizer.com. Websense would block out entire domains rather than
subdomains. I might find a personal page that had some info that might
help be alpha test our software but I couldn't get there because, say,
Websense had categorized the entire domain in Comedy or Entertainment or
some other category to which our company did not subscribe. Check with
your IT department to see if they have any restrictions or policies that
are enforced that will prevent you getting to msnbc.com. They might
consider that a fluff site.
