Can't purge deleted items

I am using an IMAP account in Outlook Express on a Windows XP system. Messages are able to be moved into folders or deleted, but I am not able to purge the deleted items. The inbox is filling quickly with all the spam mail that has been received and deleted.

Can someone help?
