can't publish local to remote

I'm using FP2003, WinXP. My URL is http://www.hindocarina.com

When I try to publish my site from the server to my hard drive I get the
following message:

"You specified identical destination filenames for some of the files you
are trying to copy. Make sure all destination files have unique names and
try again."

What does this mean, and how do I fix it? I have looked through the website
folders and don't see any identical filenames. Can files in different
folders have identical names? I'm fairly new at this and don't understand,
but I have published successfully in the past.

It means that you have two or more file name with different cases, i.e., Index.htm and index.htm.

Under Unix/Linux index.htm and Index.htm are considered to be two separate files, whereas under
Windows they are one and the same. So in order to publish to your local HD, you will need to delete
or rename one of the duplicate files.

Thanks Thomas, Is there a way to get FP to point out the problem? I've
looked and don't see anything like you describe.

look at your page names, some are capitalized...also collector's.htm has an illegal ' in the file name.

Magma,

I just recently had the same problem. Happened suddenly too as I used to be
able to publish local to remote with no problem. Got the same canned
response from Thomas too which didn't work. However, he did tell me about a
feature that helped me to experiment and find a solution.

Open the web site you want to copy from (local). Click View-Reports-All
Files. This will give you a single alphabetized list of all files in your
web site. (Pretty cool.) Go ahead and look to see if you have two files in
the same directory with the same filename (disregard case as Thomas says
Windows does). I couldn't find any file name conflicts in my list so I tried
an experiment.

I highlighted all the file names in the list, right mouse clicked and
clicked "Don't Publish". I then highlighted all the files starting with "A"
and clicked "Don't Publish" (thereby enabling publishing) and then clicked
"Publish Selected files". When that worked, I did the same thing with all
"B", "C", "D"... files until I had copied over all files. After doing this,
I then went to Publish Local to Remote and voila! it now publishes without
the error message. Don't know why, but I don't care. At least now I can
publish again. Since I didn't delete or rename any files, obviously this is
a problem in how and when Frontpage thinks there are duplicate filenames.

Try this and see if it fixes your ability to publish again. I certainly
hope so. I know how frustrated you are as I was on the verge of dumping FP
entirely because this was a show-stopper and there was NO solution available
other than a canned response that didn't work and obviously wasn't the
problem.

this group. I used Rob's adice...took out all the capital letters in file
names. When I first built the site no one told me not to do that. Months
later, after the search engines had several of my pages listed, I hesitated
to change any names because now anyone clicking those links in google, etc
will get error messages. But I knew it needed to be done, so now I've bit
the bullit. I guess sooner or later my SE listings will get back to where
they were. Thankfully the index page isn't affected.

Bottom line...now the site publishes successfully. Thanks Rob.
