PC World is selling McAfee Internet Security 2005 + Quickscan for £24.75,
the offer ends today Tuesday 12th April. Is it any good and would it be
worthwhile buying at this price? I have got spyware stored in the memory on
my computer as well as a toolbar that keeps sending pop-ups, it has taking
over Outlook Express. Everything I have tried hasn't got rid of it. I am
running XP. I tried some of the links that Lew/+Silat advised me in my last
post (11/04/05 Spy-Ware) that he said was free, but once I install (Spybot -
Search & Destroy FREE), and it found the spy-ware, I was asked for nearly
$30.00 to remove the spyware, hence the question, would buying McAfee be a
good move? If this post is sent more than once it is another error?

Are you saying Spybot asked for $30.00 to remove spyware ?
My copy is free and doesn't ask for anything but updates.

You can donate to them.
Personally I manage with
AVG free.
Spybot free.
Zone Alarm free.

Yes Eric, before Search & Destroy would remove the spyware I was told that I
had to buy it. Have I overlooked something? You can have a look at the links
I was sent on 11/04 Spy-Ware.

Sounds like you never made it to the correct place then. Spybot S&D does
not ask for money before cleaning up anything. Most likely, the spyware on
your computer is redirecting you to some other web site whenever you try to
go to:

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Quite possibly, it will similarly intercept any attempts to go to other,
well known anti-virus/anti-malware sites as well. Try going to:

http://tinyurl.com/43969

That should take you to a download.com page which has the right program
(Spybot S&D) available for download.

The REAL Spybot S&D *never* asks for payment. In fact, you have to hunt
around for info on how you might donate if you feel so inclined.
Another poster, Rick, already gave you the correct link.

From WHERE did you download your copy of Spybot? If they are scamming a
rip-off then their provider and the government needs to know?

I just went out today and bought McAffe Internet Security Suite for £24.75
at PC World, it was reduced for a couple of days from £29.99. Unfortunately
McAffe hasn't helped me and I still have this toolbar that I cant get rid of
and I cant delete the web addresses that have been put into my favourites.
When I list my favourites the bogus web site address do not appear in the
list, for me to delete them? How can I delete them? Can I download Search &
Destroy while I have McAfee installed on my computer? Anyone want to buy a
McAffe INS that has been used for a day for a penny?

Of course I mean McAfee and not McAffe. This is getting to me big time?
Scottie,

Go to the MS Update site, use the built in link XP update link in your
start menu , once there find MS Antispyware Beta - download and
install it, that should shift most of your spyware. Then get a legit
copy of Spybot S&D + a copy of Ad Aware SE. All these things are free,
the MS Antispyware will be direct from Microsoft via XP and should not
get redirected.

See if that works

I doubt McAfee will remove spyware, it supposedly protects against
spyware insytalling itself but it has to assume it is being installed
into a clean computer to start with and works from there. If you
already have lots of problems its not going to help much.

Thanks for your advice jonah, the fact is; I had MS Antispyware Beta
installed and Ad-Aware on my computer. Both found and removed spyware but
still the bogus web addresses and the toolbar keeps coming back when I
reboot. If I could find a way to remove the addresses from my favourites it
would be a good start. I have been told the spyware is stored in the
computers memory and register but how do I remove them from there? A blank
cheque will be sent to the person that solves this?

Please donate!

If payment was required then it is not legitimate.

I probably did something wrong, but here is the link I received.

http://javacoolsoftware.com/DOWNLOADS.HTML

Results in;

"Whoops! We can't find that page.

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name
changed, or is temporarily unavailable."

If the capital letters are changed to lower case then all I see is a
simple link page.

http://javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html

On that page Spybot S&D is not mentioned. But SpyBlaster 3.3 is. This
is Javacoolsoftware after all, and SpyBlaster is their product. It is
very good and well worth having, but it does not perform the function
of Spybot Search and Destroy. These are both free ware products. I
recommend both.

Nowhere do I observe a requirement for payment, or any mention of
Spybot Search & Destroy.

Spybot S&D is available FREE at;

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

The link, as shown above, won't work. You'll have to change it to lower
case. But there's no SPYBOT S&D at that location, if that's what you're
looking for.

This Tiny URL will take you to Download.com where you can get Spybot
S&D:
http://tinyurl.com/2l2c2

And, incidentally, I just made a donation for S&D because they deserve
support for their excellent work. Come to think of it, the Tiny URL
folks ought to get a donation for that handy little applet.

Well, in German, an "Affe" is a monkey or ape, both terms apply. Monkey
see, monkey do, or what?

Scottie I am not confident enough to advise you on fiddling with your
registry, maybe somebody more experience than me will give you the gen
however if you open MS Antispyware and click on advanced tools there
is a browser hijack restore tool there. It tells you what IEs present
default settings are and allows you to change them. I am not sure
exactly to use it because I have had no occasion to yet but I assume
it must change rhe relevant registry settings. Looks straightforward
enough to me good job MS did not code it

Have a look at it, it may help.

Thanks for the help jonah, I finely got the computer fixed thanks to a
computer whiz kid that uses the News Group, 24hoursupport.helpdesk. You
should give it a try, it's very good.
