Can't Playback DVD Movies after installing Vista ?

G

Guest

I'm really getting frustrated to find out that after installing Vista Home
Premium ,that I can't playback movies on dvd on my computer. Playing back
movies was not a problem before Vista. I have the same problem on my lap top.
Is there a patch out there to fix the problem ?

Windows does not have a native movie player. You must have had an
application for this purpose on your previous setup if you played movies
previously. With what application were movies played before you moved to
Vista?

Windows XP and Windows Vista do not come with the DVD Playback Codex, been
this way for a long time you used to be able to play movies because at some
point you installed a 3rd party codec to allow playback of DVD movies on
your computer.

If you have old DVD movie software, install it and see if it fixes the
problem. The only freeware DVD codec I know of is used with Videolan (VLC,
you can find it at http://www.videolan.org), but the codec only works in
VLC, not other players like Windows Media Player, and for some reason I
can't get VLC to run very well on my system.

Good luck,
A.

VLC works properly for us on Windows Server 2008 so it should work on
Vista. We are using it with a Plextor DVD and a RME HDSP 9632 sound card.
One unfortunate problem is that much audiovisual functionality is
limited by the Microsoft imposed content controls.

Media Player will play commercial DVD just fine in Vista Ultimate (don't
know about the other versions). The necessary codec's are included with the
install of Vista.

In the early RC versions of Vista there was a time bomb on the codec's,
after which they no longer worked.

Well, nuts, that'll teach me to look before I leap. I actually hadn't
tested the function. Like you, I don't know if the codec is time bombed but
I put a commercial DVD in the drive and up popped WMP 11 and once I went
through the WMP setup (I had not set it up previously), it played as did a
DVD I burned from a VHS video tape. For the record, this is Vista Ultimate.
I don't know if Vista Home Premium includes that function but if it doesn't,
that would certainly explain the OP's issues.

Thanks, Richard.

Unfortunately, it isn't a problem, it's by design. Microsoft's way to extort
more money out of you to get you to buy Vista Ultimate. I struggled with this
problem unable to play videos or find a compatible player until someone in
this group suggested "Media Player Classic". It's nice, simple, and not
bloated with a bunch of useless crap.

Unfortunately, you've stumbled onto the first of many ways that upgrading
from XP to Vista is much more like "downgrading" to a less powerful OS.

But hey, you get a 5 pixel wide transparent border around your windows now so
that's got to make it worth all the hassle, right?

You have no idea what you are talking about!

Windows XP did not play DVD's either, without 3rd party software and the
requisite codec's.

You've been dogging Richard for quite some time haven't you?
You're like a dog without a bone!
What happened...you failed to meet the MVP requirements? That's not
surprising...based on what we've all seen you post in the past.
You need to be bit*hed slapped around this ng some more.
You up to it? You seem awfully weak to me.
You ready?

My XP played them just fine before I in-place "upgraded" it to Vista. Sure,
it was probably due to a 3rd party codec that was installed, but that's
beside the point.

I spent months trying to get WMP to play DVDs and VOB files, even after
confirming the appropriate codecs were installed. In fact, now that I'm
running "Media Player Classic", I know that the machine is capable of playing
DVDs, and WMP still won't touch them.

One of the few success stories I have from this group is the knowledgeable
and helpful person who recommended Media Player Classic to me instead of the
bloated out crappy Microsoft WMP.

Okay and thanks.

I actually, can't recall if I tried it on Vista and when I had checked their
site, they said they were working on a new version for Vista and mentioned
some possible issues. However, because they don't list VLC as specifically
compatible with Vista, I'm a bit reluctant to recommend it at this time.

M

there is a minor one and it involves what you use to decode the video.

for output module you may have to select Windows GDI video output.

if you get a blank screen when viewing a movie.

WMP will list the installed DVD codecs in its Help:About:Technical Support
Information menu tool.

If I recall correctly, most vendors require a reinstall of their for-pay DVD
decoders after the OS install/upgrade/etc.

In your particular case, you have an installed DVD decoder that solely works
with MPC. WMP would work in this scenario once a compatible DVD decoder is
installed. =)

In Jocko's case, Premium includes a DVD decoder, so that should have worked.
More information about how exactly that failed would probably be useful
previous to people speculating. =)
