can't play video effect

before dragging video effect on storyboard i used to play
the effect first but now it won't play
 
This seems to be a problem, I also cannot preview my storyboard in the preview window. I get the audio, but no video. Video preview prior to dragging onto storyboard works ok.
 
I'm also having this issue with not being about to see preview, but do have audio. I'm using a new dell Media Center PC.
