Can't ping, can't see home network

Joe Christl

I've got a nagging problem that has been bothering me. I have two
xphome pc's. One was hardwired /w sp2 into a Gateway (router), the
other was wireless w/o sp2. Before, I could have lan games betwee the
two, no problem.

I had shut off Windows Firewall on the one with sp2.

At one point I decided to upgrade the wireless one without sp2, since
there were no outstanding issues with the other. Well, today I
decided to run a lan game, and I couldn't.

Troubleshooting showed that the wireless could see/ping the Gateway,
and see the internet. The other pc can ping both the wireless pc, and
the gateway; with internet capabilities staying the same.

I then noticed that I could not see the workgroup from the wireless
either.

I've checked everything that I know of... workgroup names, subnet
masks, other firewall settings (I added the trusted ip's into my
Norton Personal firewall for each pc).

I've ran the pc's with and without any type of firewall. I've ran and
reran the Home Network Wizard about 4 or 5 times, each time enabling
File sharing. I even enabled NetBios over TCP/IP, without any luck.
Lastly, I've rebuild the TCP/IP using "netsh int ip reset
resetlog.txt" stack on each pc.

And still, I can ping the wireless, but the wireless can ping the
wired.
Both can ping the gateway.

I am at my wits end here. After all this is there anyone out there
that may be able to understand what the heck is going on here?

Thank you,
Joe

Generally this only occurs when a firewall is not working correctly
(assuming it's configured correctly) on the PC that cannot be pinged.

I recommend completely uninstalling all firewalls until the problem is
resolved.

No, I can't help. But you aren't alone. I think the
problem relates to the security keys. I've posted the
almost identical query to Microsoft support - will post
here if I get any joy.

Joe,

I would like to help you, but I am somewhat confused about your problem.

Can you not ping by ip address? Or maybe not by name? Can you please restate
"I can ping the wireless, but the wireless can ping the wired.".

Please define the scope of the problem more precisely. From each computer, test
connectivity:
1) Ping itself by name.
2) Ping itself by ip address.
3) Ping the other by name.
4) Ping the other by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / exact error displayed in each test (12 tests total).

If you had another wired computer to test with, I would advise you to swap
router ports / cables. How about just trying another router port on the wired
computer? Maybe buy another cable (it is not a waste of money to have a spare
cable).

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Open TCP/IP properties of the connection, General tab, Advanced
properties, Options tab, TCP/IP filtering properties. If Permit Only is
set on the ports/protocols, Enable filtering, and change to Permit All.
Also, enable the Internet Connection Firewall and Internet Connection
Sharing service - set to Automatic startup and then Start the service -
even if the firewall is disabled. Do the same to the Security Center
service. See if any of this helps.
