Can't paste text into a Merged Cell

I've just upgraded to Office 2003 and now I can't paste text selected from
Word into a merged cell in Excel - is this normal or am I doing something
wrong?

xl2002 works this way, too. (I don't recall the behavior of earlier versions.)

Any chance you could just paste into the formula bar?

(you might have to reapply the formatting you want, though.)
