cant open my documents

after my laptop crashed saved all my documents and re-installed them,now i
dont seem to have the programme to open them,when trying to re-install the
programme with my original disc error 53 keeps popping up.Bought a new
Microsoft 2000 works disc and its not the same package as i had previously
had.
All my documents are on my computer but just cant open them,and i dont know
what they were created in HELP HELP HELP
