by using the open button in the file tab of word but

how can i get this to open, i odnt think i can get
another copy of it?

Are you sure it is a WORD document? Other programs could
use .doc but be a different format.

It could even be encrypted.

Windows only labels it as a Word document because the .DOC extension is
registered in the system as a Word filetype. That doesn't guarantee it IS a
Word document though. Possibly it's actually a ZIP or RAR compressed file
that's just been renamed as a DOC, but It's more likely that the file is
corrupt.

While it's convention to use the file extension to identify the type of
file, having a *.doc on end doesn't guarantee it's a Word file. In
fact, you can put any extension on a file that you want. Further, a
file formatted for Word can be openend in Word even if the extension is
something other than *.doc.

The file probably one or more of the following:
1. not Microsoft Word.
2. encrypted
3. corrupted
Contact the person who gave you the file and get another, or find out
what program created it.
