Can't Open Files

Hi,
I'm not sure what happened but something happened to the open file option of
Excel & Word. Both applications open without problem, but once they are open
and I click on the Open File Icon or File, OPEN, both programs go into the
not responding mode. If I select a Excel or Word file from Windows Explorer
or the right pane of the application, it will open without problem. Just
can't use the File, Open or Open Folder Icon option.

Does anyone have a clue as to what could be causing this?
