Can't open file

Guest

I have reorganized my file structure resulting in longer path names. Now I
can't open any of my htm files with FrontPage 2000 . If I move them to a
location with a shorter path I can open them.

Is there a max file/path length for FP? If so what is the max? And, is there
any way to get around the limitation?

Thanks....

How did you move the files, from within or outside of FP? Should always be done from within FP,
never using any other method.

I copied everything using Windows Explorer. I can copy them anywhere as long
as the path name is fairly short. I also make it a practice to use relative
addressing for all my links so it shouldn't matter where anything resides as
long as I don't change the structure of anything in the web site. It seems to
be around 150 or so characters that it starts complaining that it can't open
the file.

I just created a new page and saved it in the new directory structure and it
displays ok with IE. Then I tried opening it with FP and it gives me the same
error... "Couldn't open file: C:\Documents and
Settings...\blah\blah\blah\blah.htm.

Always publish the site from one location to another via FP and if you need to move folder/files
within the web then do so from within FP.

Do the above you will not have this problem.

After creating the folder, did you open the folder via FP and let FP make it a web / site?

Thomas, I'll try what you say. It'll take me a while and I'll have to
experiment a little. My site has over 2000 pages (Not all generated by FP) so
I don't think it's going to be as simple as saving from one site to another.
I'll do some testing and probably have more info about what's going on
tomorrow. I think I'm going to create a couple new test sites.

Thanks,
Gordon

You don't save, you use File Menu | Publish | Web / Site an pages not created in FP, need/should to
be imported into FP before using/linking.

Ok, I've decided that locating the hundreds of FP generated web pages in my
site so I can save them to another folder is not a viable thing to do.
I've been moving html files around to different folders for a lot of years
without problems. What I'm seeing here is perplexing. I'm not creating any
"Webs". I only use FP for an html page editor, so there's no Web to publish
anywhere. On the file menu, Publish Web is greyed out no matter where my
pages are located because I've never created a Web. I've been doing this
since the first release of FP without any problems. Each page stands on it's
own so there is no association with a FrontPage Web. I've never imported any
pages to a Web, mainly because I don't like the way FP tries to "manage" all
the links.

I have done some experimenting by moving the root folder of one of my sites
to various different folders and found the following:

I am using one file as an example of one of several hundred (in various
folders) that won't open in the given circumstance.

The original path for the file(s) was:
C:\Legacy\web\Pictures\Census
Documents\1850_Census_Philadelphia_Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.htm

I've been creating FP pages in the above folder for the last year or so. I
also have other pages created in "My Webs\xxxxx" and other places that I
have been able to "copy" to this and other folders and then edit.

Legacy is a program that likes to install itself in C:\Legacy and default
the user files to the same folder where the app is installed. I've been
fighting backups for the last year having to seperate the user files from
the app everytime I want to do a backup not to mention other logistical
problems with publishing to the web and creating CD presentations. This is
the reason for my reorg. I reinstalled the app in "Program Files\Legacy",
where, in my opinion, is where it belongs, and then set the user files
parameter to" My Documents\CD_luke_family" which is where all my user
created files are located. I have everything organized for easy web
publishing, CD creation and backups. Everything is working fine in Legacy.
It can read all the files. Everything else works fine The only problem I am
having is that FP can't open any of my html files.

I "copied" all the files to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\My
Documents\CD_luke_family\FamilyPictures\web\luke\pictures\Census
Documents\1850_Census_Philadelphia_Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.htm

I can't edit any files in the above folder.

If I "rename/move" the files in C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\My
Documents\CD_luke_family\FamilyPictures\web\luke\pictures\Census Documents\
(the path that doesn't work) to one of the three paths below I CAN edit
them. (this makes me think the error doesn't have anything to do with
importing/publishing)

1. C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\My
Documents\a\b\web\luke\pictures\Cens\1850_Census_Philadelphia_Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.htm
Note : In the path above renaming the folder "Cens" to Censu" (adding
one more character to the path causes FP to get the Can't open page
error...???

2. C:\CD_luke_family\FamilyPictures\web\luke\pictures\Census
Documents\1850_Census_Philadelphia_Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.htm

3. C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\My Documents\My
Webs\CD_luke_family\FamilyPictures\web\luke\pictures\Census
Documents\1850_Census_Philadelphia_Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.htm

This doesn't make sense to me.

The web pages are very simple....html below...
----------------------
<html>

<head>
<title>Census Page</title>
<base target="_blank">

</head>

<body BGCOLOR="FFF8F2" >

<p align="center"><img border="0"
src="1850%20Census%20Philadelphia%20Philadelphia%20Pennsylvania.jpg"
width="2720" height="3327">

</html>
-------------------------

I also have another site "CD_schmalz_family" that acts the same way.

My web site is a conglomeration of various pages generated by various means.
FP is only one several apps I use to create html files.

My next option is to move the sites to one of the locations that does work,
but I'd really like to understand what's going on.

Basically you are using FP in a way it was not designed to be used, which is why the FP Editor and
FP Explorer were combined as of the release of FP2000.

FP strongest point is it's ability to manage a collection of files and folders as complete web site,
not individual files and folders.

I'll concede that I don't use FP to It's fullest capabilities but it just
doesn't fit with my site requirements. One thing it allows me to do is
quickly create pages and preview them. My site is not only a web site but
has many other interactive elements that FP is clearly not designed to handle.

I'll say again that I've been using FP for years, moving files, moving to
new PCs, restructuring folders and moving to newer versions of FP and never
had a problem until now.

This structure works: (files copied from old folder)
C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\My
Documents\a\b\web\luke\pictures\Cens\1850_Census_Philadelphia_Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.htm

I started randomly renaming the folders with shorter names until I got FP to
work then added back one character and it quit working again.

I guess if I had to boil it down to one question it would be: Why does
renaming the folder "Cens" to Censu" (adding one more character to the path
causes FP to get the Can't open page error...???

It still seems like a max path length problem to me. I guess I'll just pick
one of the paths that work and not worry about it.

Thanks for you responses.

Are you making the folder name changes in FP or via Windows?

The procedure I used was:

1. Open FP
2. Try opening file with FP
3. Shut down FP
4. Rename folder using Windows Explorer

Repeated 1 thru 4 reducing the path length until FP was able to open the
file. Then increased th path length by one characher and FP quit working
again.

There is no reason to keep any FP webs / files in your default location
C:\Documents and Settings\Gordon\My Documents

Create a top level folder in Windows
- for "loose" page Say C:\MyPages
- for a web Say C:\MyWebA or C:\MyWebB
Copy all your files to the appropriate folder
Open the Web folder in FP by using File Open Web/Site and browse to C:\MyWeb (FP will convert it to a web)
