Can't open existing database

Have begun to receive a message on a file that we've been using for some time
that states "The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because
you and another user are attempting to chage the same data at the same time."
This same message appears when I try to open the backup copy. New database
doesn't have the problem.
