Hi, when i email a word or excel doc to work it won't
open. it says to check the correct file name and does it
have .doc extension. checked and it does. checked original
file and it is set to archive. I sometimes get 'asked' to
check my network connection. Did I read somewhere about
shared files - is that an issue?
Don't know if this is connected but - my son recently re-
installed win98 for me and when he tried to find the My
Docs folder on the other drive he saved old info on, he
couldn't find it. eventually sussed it HAD been marked
a 'hidden' folder i.e when we changed to 'show all files'
it appeared and we moved it over to new drive. within the
My Docs folder some of the folders are shaded out, but
even if I email a file from within a folder thats NOT
shaded out it still won't open at other end.
this is a real pain because I did loads of work at home
that I can't take to work. the same happens if I put files
on floppy.
Please help an old man who was brought up using an
Abacus!!
I use Win98, IE6

I think you've got some detective work to do.

When you send yourself word/excel files from work to your work, do you have
trouble?

If yes, then it's not your home setup.

If no, what do you use for an email client at home? Do you compose in plain
text, html, or rich text?

If you use richtext format, try plain text or HTML. (If your attachments look
like winmail.dat, then this could be the solution.)

What happens if you zip your file first--it'll also compress the file(s).

You'll need something like winzip at both pcs: http://www.winzip.com (They have
an evaluation period--try before you buy.)

If your test files (from work--to work) didn't work, maybe reregistering excel
and word would help:

close excel & word
windows start button|Run
excel /unregserver
excel /regserver

winword /unregserver
winword /regserver

(four different commands)

the /unregserver & /regserver resets the registry's defaults.

Are you saving the file to your HD and then opening from within Excel or Word?

In Excel, go to Tools Options General and make sure ignore Other Applications is
unchecked.
