I have a bunch of projects I am working on in WMM all saved. When I try to
open them in WMM I get an error message saying Windows Movie Maker has
encountered a problem and needs to close. Someone help please??

If you worked with Windows Media Center or even another Windows Media Player
10 or 11+ while woring on your projects project app , look for your files
that may have been saved as saved as *.dvr.ms for video or recorded OTA TV
that you may habe cut and pasted material from. Of course MS in the latest XP
updates ESPECIALLY XP3 and Vista SP 1 either added to or enhanced "tightened"
the Digital Rights Management codecs to prevent copying, or even playing if
copied to another machine...I have educated myself as much as MS and the
other Recording Labels or sw companies have told the truth about DRM. Most of
it has come from others around the globe where DRM CANNOT be enforced since
it's really began an is till pretty much a US law/regulation...whatever. Off
the record I have read that some MP3's, WMA, Real (Rhapsody now from Verizon
Wireless and Real Networls) or even WMV, etc., either won't play the file
correctly, won't play the audio, or the audio is out of sync (audio sync (as
a general tool) is COMPLETELY Missing from VISTA' OR none of the imported
library files will NOT play at all for some people. Then there is the UNIQUE
sitaution with non-english, non-us recordings , or us DVD.s, CD's sold in
countries where govt is corrupt etc. What a mess !!! IT's all usually related
to the Digital Rights Managment CRAP that MS and others have encoded in their
software . But there are also many older cases/examples related to: where
did yo download your material from and what OS and programs, app's , updates,
codecs did they have; if not just different older Windows software (even some
macs THAT DON'T have the correct audio or video/ or mismatched codecs.
Surefire problems including ap hangs and csreen freezes, but more often with
in music and video applications other audio or vid files WILL play but after
a certain date or a certain # of plays or i.e., after a certain period
(30-60-90 days after sw is installed and activated) the DRM requires you to
somehow BUY or obtain CURRENT DRM files/codecs and the files cease to play..
Me thinks that the Digital Rights Management encoded in all most current XP
updates and in all Vista original content and releases; but more rigidly
enforced in Vista SP1 and latest release of all VISTA PC's Laptops and
desktops with Cista and Vista SP1 already loededare the source of your
problems. Questions: do you find your files and they just wont play? Do your
video files play but wiith no audio, or audio but no video? Did any of these
files play on an earlier XP machine XP SP! and even some of XP SP2 didn't
enforce the DRM the way the entertainment, communications, wireless and
recording companies are now clamping down. EVEN THOUGH WE PAID FOR THE BLOODY
CONTENT.This really screws us as customers. Before getting fully engulfed in
sorting out the DRM garbage try rolling back drivers, audio and video files
you may need to save the newer ones to disc to be safe in case you haver an
OEM installed OS. Once the drivers etc have been rolled back and their newer
counterparts have been cut/burned to a backup disc; restart and try, it can't
hurt. Another way to check to see if it's the complete NEWER OS's screwing
with your files -To see if this may be the source of your problems: try
copying a few files onto a CD or a short DVD file and save them both ways
(but format the disc using XP) 1. just copy and burn the old and even some
new problem files to new discs (XP formatted) and 2. for the second copy of
the same file the disc; this time see if you can copy and check the box at
the bottom of the details or options box that allows you to choose choose the
option that removes all personal and other information but the file name. 3.
Last-sve a copy with the dirver, etc. rolled back and see if they'll play on
an XP.XPSP2 OS if you don't have one see ifyou can borrow one. Many NEW
Notebooks owner ditched VISTA and reloaded with XP after a year+++ worth of
unsolved problems and lost data. Don't know if this will help. But when I
re-copied 3rd and 4th copies of the Olympics Videos to my NDAS hard drive and
used those "stripped copies" removing as much personal and other technical
details (just keeping the file name, location etc EXACTLY the same so my PC or
NB wouldn't send it into the abyss or erase it....Then using EARLIER versions
of Roxio or other software for editing/cut/paste videos but would stil save
it in the HD high pixelation for a final MOVIE was a lot easier. i've always
had NVidia graphics cards and they seem to just kick back and work ! I've had
similar problems as I recorded the HD Over the air NBC local affiliate
digital TV broadcasts of the Opening and Closing ceremonies from the XXIX
Olypmiad. I saved them into about 15 short files each a.) to elimate as many
commercials as possible and b.) to allow natural breaks so I could later add
filler content broadcasts from China during the 2 weeks that was true history
of the Olympics from Day1, and sometimes had memorable short interviews or
rebroadcasts of past Olympic events/World records, e.g., the Mark Spitz
improved recordings of his record breaking swims and then his interview with
Rowdy Gaines and ? I went to school in Indiana 30 miles north of Indianapolis
at the same time Spitz was going to undergraduate school at IUPUI (Indiana
University/Purdue University @ Indianapolis): locally referred to or called
"UU-EE-POO-EE" ...just FYI] I also recorded other historic and relevant local
Chinese events that the Central Govt. did their best to hide, masque or
bulldoze., etc. all to pull off a 40 billion dollar Olympic showpiece. I'm
also having problems syncing the live video as opposed to prerecorded
tapings..the live events have many glitches with sometimes "spotty" music and
spoken audio. Some of that WAS just because of the gigantic technologic
marvel of HD from half-way 'round the world and sometimes weather wreaking a
tiny bit of interruption in the DTV local NBC signal. I've spent over a week
just trying to produce the cut and pasted movie with a few transitions
bewteen sequences. But it's been fun in that the finished product is of such
video quality, crisp and defined colors . Kinda' my own first pre-Star Wars
production using only my Vista notebook and an NDAS (Ximeta 250gig external
hard-drive. (and my good old XP SP2 desktop) Please post and let me know if
ANY of these suggestions helped. I'm sure you pounded the desk a few times
trying to figure out why a simple file won't play. ALSO...JUST A LAST minute
BRAIn flash-TRY UNISTALLING VISTA SP1 !!-if you can and the see if you can
get your WMM to cooperate. By default, MS want WMM movies saved (whether
edited and finished or NOT) to be burned to the default DVD write drive...so
see if you can find somewhere in options to uncheck that!)Also check and SEE
if your WMM files are also on a completely different drive that your NB isn't
listing, or move them BACK to the C:.Program Files/WMM.... They may be in a
TEMP file with not working software or a key app in the compete WMM software
that's missing. Check the MS website for WMM. I did and MY VISTA NB didn't
list drive "G" and that was where all my stuff was ! Also a ton of new
content is only being offered in WMA, WMV with DRM format's and if you have
any of those audio/video tweaked above defaults or haven't kept up with the
MS updates if your running MS VISTA) theses DRM changes will probably be one
of the major source(s) or problems for most of these and any "future
incidents". If you know of any sw that I can use by loading my finished
"movies" on my old XP desktop on which I have not loaded any NEW updates or
suspicuous DRM audio/video files/codecs beyond what you migh label as
Windows Media Player 10.2 [nor will I EVER LOAD XP SP3 on my old desktop].
Good luck my friend and NEVER give up! Give Microsoft an hellofan earful!! I
have a couple of high-level tech support supervisors and can provide you with
their names and MS email addresses (from emails seeking similar support just
in past 30 days ! and if that will help. Also try getting your hands on a
copy of complete stranger's (;>) Roxio software and see if your content will
open and run on it?
Just let me know.

Thanks for your help although I got lost in everything that you were saying
and son't know a lot about DRM's and all that suff lol. Sorry. I can tell you
though that I am using a Windows XP Home Edition and my Windows Movie Maker
was working just fine up until a few months ago then this started happening.
I can locate my saved projects just fine. This is exactly what happens when I
try to open one of my saved projects in WMM: I open up WMM and click the OPEN
icon in WMM. Then I find my project just fine (in my videos) and click open.
The little loading bar goes across (the one in WMM that let's you know it is
opening) and then about half way through it stops and I get an error message
saying Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close. Then
WMM usually freezes and I have to right click it on my toolbar and select
close a few times before the box comes up asking if I would like to End Now.
Thank you for your help and hopefully you can help me fix this problem!!

This can sometimes happen if you have incompatible file types in your
project, such as mpegs or mp3.
Cure would be to remove these files from your pc, then try to open the
project.
Of course, if you made a whole movie with mpegs, you may as well start
again, and use compatible files instead, such as wmv.
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/MovieMaker/File_type_compatibility.htm

Also a corrupt file can cause this problem, but finding which one can be
time consuming. Delete a file, ensure it goes to the bin, then try to open
project. If that doesn't work, reinstate file and try the next.
Of course, if you are unlucky enough to have two corrupt files you are on a
hiding to nothing.

Are all your projects not working?

If you start a fresh project, use compatible files, will this open properly
the next time you start your pc?
