Can't make partition C: bigger - only smaller

I have a 300gig hard drive. I created a 5 gig partition (C:) and
installed Win XP home edition on it. I made 3 other partitions with
remaining 295 gig. Despite installing all programs and even placing
the swap file on the other partitions, I'm almost out of space on
drive C: and realise I need to increase the size.

I have Paragon Partition Manager but I only seem able to downsize C:
not increase it. I even tried splitting the adjacent 100gig partition
in half to create a 50gig (unformatted) space.

Can anyone please tell me how to expand C: into this space?

I only use Partition Magic for that sort of stuff and it's a rather old
version actually. Anyhow, if you want to try it then you can try taking one
of the other drives and decreasing the size. You have to make it smaller
before you can make the C: drive bigger normally. Sometimes, and I have not
used your application, you can merge them. If that's an option you could
take one of your drives partitions (clear the stuff out of it I suppose) and
merge it with the C: drive.

When you created the 50Gig of free space was it at the beginning of the
adjacent partition. In other words to be able to increase the size of the
C:\ partition you need to create some free space from the next partition and
that free space needs to be at the beginning i.e. at the end of partition
C:\.

Hope that makes sense.

What Neil said. The free space you create must be next to the partition
you want to expand. However you may have the other three partitions
inside an extended partition. If you don't, the partitions will be as
follows

(Bottom of Disk)
First partition C: (Primary)
Second partition D: (Primary)
Third partition E: (Primary)
Fourth partition F; (Primary)
(Top of disk)

(or similar),

If you use an extended partition the disk will be laid out like this:

(Bottom of disk)
First partition C: (Primary)
Second partition (Extended) containing
--Third partition D: (Secondary or 'logical')
--Fourth partition E: (Secondary or 'logical')
--Fifth partition F: (Secondary or 'logical')
(Top of disk)

If you have the first setup then shrink D: and move it to the right to
free up space. If you have the second setup, you will have to shrink D:,
move it to the right, and move the lower bound of the Extended partition
up to free up space if your software will allow you to resize an
extended partition from the bottom. If it does not, you perhaps could
shrink the D: partition, move the others to the left, shrink the
extended partition from the top and move it right to free up the space.

Cheers,

Cliff

Thanks (Neil too)

The free space I created is right next to the C: partition. I think I
may not be able to do anything because i didn't format the free space
I created. I'll have another go.
