Can't Log On

Went in to set up a new network connection (using 2000
Professional). When I restarted, the login dialog box no
longer includes the 2 domain choices I had. My username
does appear. I type in my password and get the message
that the domain may be incorrect. However the dropdown
box to select a domain no longer appears. What gives?

Disjoining the domain destroyed the client/ domain trust. You'll need to
physically reconnect to the domain and rejoin it to the domain. You can
logon locally with any valid local account. The cached domain account
information is no longer available. Ask the systems administrator to rejoin
the pc back to the domain.

Dave,

Thanks. Now a few problems or questions....What if I no
longer have acces to the original domain? The computer
was from an old company that just dumped the desktops. If
that is a problem, will one of the password unlock
programs work? If not, would I be able to do a clean
upgrade/install of windows XP home?

If I were able to manage getting on to the domain, would
just plugging in the desktop rejoin it automatically? I
may be able to physically connect but the people who set
up the domain are not around.

Thanks Dave.

* Yes, you can logon locally with any valid local account. Try the
administrator account. Or try one of the freely available password reset
utilities.

If not, would I be able to do a clean
| upgrade/install of windows XP home?
* Yes. To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom or setup
disks. When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other
partitions found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then
again restart the pc booting the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter
assignments with your new install.

* No, a domain admin would need to do the rejoin.
