Can't log on at start-up

I recently shut down my computer (XP Pro) I remember
seeing an error box indicating something about "hidden
windows not responding" The computer shut down, and when
I tried to log on a day later, the screen to choose me as
the user came up. (this never happened before - it used
to log on directly) After trying to log on as myself and
the admin, the same thing would happen - it says logging
on, the goes straight to saving settings - back to the
logon. A loop. I can't log on either way. Tried to log
on in safe mode, same thing. The desktop flashes briefly
on startup like it used to - then just goes to the loop.
Any input?

Thanks in advance,
DQ

PS - Recently downloaded sP2.

I saw your posting after I posted mine. I have the same
problem. So does Andre - look further down today's
postings for Andre's posting about logon problem. See
Rock's response. I am going to try the solution now.
