Can't launch Remote assistance from Messenger

I'm trying to get my dad (who's got a new XP home pc) to
launch "remote assistance" from Messenger, so I can help
him out with stuff. However when he tries to do so, he
keeps getting a message saying he has the wrong version of
Messenger (he has 6.1.0203). I run the same version. If
I try to initiate the remote assistance myself, it does
not complete, saying the person has not accepted the
connection.
Any ideas??

My XP Home PC sits on a home lan connecting to a win2000
machine with ICS.
