Since I upgraded to XP SP2, I can no longer launch explorer.exe or
iexplorer.exe, seems all other programs are fine, but can't do basic
things like open 'My Computer', but I can surf the web if I use Mozilla.

What can I do to restore explorer.exe ?

thanx

Jeff

I'm having the same problem. I've tried installing SP2 a number of times
with no luck. Did you ever get this resolved?

I am having exactly the same problem like you guys on a Compaq Presario 1500,
while SP2 worked fine on my desktop pc and tablet pc.

Everything came back to normal when I uninstalled SP2. Tried all suggestions
I could find on the newsgroup, but the same problem persisted after the
several install and uninstall routine.

Don Taylor reported this problem and posted his comment to many threads.

To the MVPs, this is not an imaginery problem. It is definitely a problem of
MS and SP2. So get back to work and find a solution!

Sorry, Richard, I didn't know. A thousand apologies if my comment offended you.

Now that you told me, it explained to me why SOME of them are sarcastic in
their attempts to help.

Check at the HP/Compaq site. They use proprietary systems and there are
actions you need to take for installing SP2

Have you contacted Compaq? Both HP and its subsidiary Compaq are well
known for providing "customized" OEM installations of Windows that are
then not compatible with subsequent service packs.

But then again, with your attitude, I'm not too surprised that you've
had trouble getting help.

Everyone's time on UseNet is voluntary. I can also understand why the OP
had the wrong impression of what is *REALLY* being posted to. I've never
been to the 'M$ Communities' web page, but I'm sure that most of non-usenet
savvy person's looking for help there think it's a M$ site, staffed by M$
employee's.

I resolved my issue. Turned out it was some spy/ad-ware that spybot failed
to catch. I uninstalled xp sp 2, installed and ran Ad-aware, which caught a
bunch of stuff spybot didn't, then re-installed sp 2, and it worked. Hope
this helps.

I still haven't resolved my problem. I did what you mentioned the last time,
and I did it again, but the problem persisted.

I am now resigned to getting round the problem by using Hyperexplorer in
place of Windows Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox instead of Windows Internet
Explorer.
