Can't Install Vista

I run the install of Vista RTM Ultimate and it runs through the install and
on the first restart it locks up and won't go any further. I have attempted
a clean install, an update, a boot install and i have tried earlier releases
of VISTA and i have also tried the 64 and 32 bit versions all with the same
result.....lockup/stall on first reboot. Can anyone give me any insight into
why this problem is happening?

i highly doubt that it is failing, as i have NO problems with it running XP
and it is fairly new, about 6 months old. I have not had any problems with
it prior to the install and it continues to run xp fine, just won't finish
installing vista.

Have you provided storage controller drivers to load during install? Load
Drivers button (old F6 in XP)

Did you leave all peripheral devices connected? Have you tried install with
just the basics, ie no printers, card readers, other peripherals except
keyboard and mouse?

With a SMART status of fail, the solution seems to be obvious.
Replace the hard drive.
Whether it seems to be working OK with another OS is irrelevant.
Age of the drive is irrelevant.
The most relevant fact is the "FAIL" by SMART status.
Contact the hard drive manufacturer if the drive is in warranty.

Hard drive failure is imminent, back-up important data immediately.

ok i will contact the manufacturer of the hard drives...could this be a
potential problem because of them being SATA hd's? they are my 2 newest
drives and the other 2 are fine and they are old IDE drives.
here is the specific error i am getting from the 2 SATA Drives:

I have one last thing to add that might be causing the SMART problem...i
was
in the data lifeguard tools and noticed that on each of the 2 harddrives
that
have the SMART error the SMART Support is DISABLED....how do i enable it?

can i? and can this be what is causeing the problem with the error?

You usually turn SMART monitoring off/on in the BIOS so have a look there.

There is a view in uk.comp.homebuilt that the only sensible use for WD
drives is as door stops in view of their high failure rate. It is
essential to ensure they do not run hot - place them behind the input
fans. Having said his I have never had issues with WD drives.

I didn't read that comment until after I bought 3 x WD SATA drives but I
have successfully installed Vista on the 80GB WD SATA drive and use the 2
x 250GB drives for data, it is backed up nightly to a NAS but I think that
also has WD drives.

There is also an issue with the nForce 4 IDE storage software, usual
recommendation is not to install it, use the XP/Vista built in drivers
instead. I don't think that is relevant here because you don't seem to get
to that stage.

That error doesn't mean anything. That's just the "vendor wants more
money" error. If there is no warning involving reallocated sectors or
something similar, then you should be okay.

You're probably having trouble loading Vista on the SATA drive because you
didn't load the drivers during the initial part of setup.

nForce 4 doesn't require SATA drivers and he wouldn't have gotten to this
point if it needed the drivers. Either it would not have seen any drives to
install to or it would have failed the first reboot.

It has nothing to do with it being SATA. It has everything to do with a bum
drive. You are very lucky to have this warning in time to avoid loss of
data.

Check the BIOS to enable SMART.

Another slim possibility.
Swap the cables going to the drive and try another controller.
If you still have the problem contact the manufacturer.

One last thing.
A few have suggested it is not a problem or it may just be a way for the
manufacturer to get you to purchase another drive.
SMART is very reliable an I will not have a SMART failure with anything
important.
I suggest you ignore them and ask yourself a question:
When the drive fails, who loses data?
You or the person suggesting it is not a problem?
