Can't install/update KB957790?

A

Ant

Hello.

I am trying to install today's KB957790 update from both Office Update
and a stand alone download (office2000-KB957790-FullFile-ENU.exe), but
both failed to update my old Office 2000 Premium SP3.

In Office Update, I get errors as seen in screen captures:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/5418/screenshoterror2kb.gif ...

Zipped logs: http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/temp/Office2Klogs.zip (will
delete when resolved).

Any ideas what's up and how to fix this?

Thank you in advance. :)

Yeah. Hmm, I don't have SR1, but do have SP3 according to Help -> About.
Can I use SP3 to fix it? I also noticed Detect and Repair fails on
PowerPoint quickly. It seems like my PowerPoint is broken and needs a
full reinstall.

Weird. I wonder why it is doing this:

And PPTTools.PPA and PPRead9.TXT are files from an Office 2000 install

Now pardon me while I flail about a bit trying to work out why this might
be happening to you. Thoughts:

Might you have had Office 2000 previously and done an update install to
2003?

Or deleted its files but not uninstalled it?

Nope. Never installed 2003. I did install Office 2007 compatibilty pack
SP2 on Saturday. I don't know if I had issues before that?

Might you at one time have had M mapped to a network drive or SUBST'd to a
directory for installation purposes?

Nope. I always had M: for my CD/DVD drive.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people?

Snit happens?

Yep. This is like my second time I had reinstall Office since its
release. :(

I am doing an uninstall and reinstall from scratch for Office. I tried
to remove PowerPoint only and reinstal, and it wouldn't let me
reinstall. So I am removing all Office 2000 and reinstalling and
reupgrading.

Grrrrrrr. What the heck is going on. I don't know why the updater wants
to update my CD copy. I will deal with this later since I am out of time
to mess with. Maybe I will get a newer version since 2000 seems too
buggy to me. I have had problems in Windows 98 SE with of Office Update
failed to update too (different problems)!

Is SR-1a installed? Seems that you are missing that needed update of the SP. you
need to uninstall Office 2000 and all service packs and start again and install SR-
1a first and then you can skip to SP3 immediately without installing SP 2. The most
important is to have SR 1a installed first before anything

P

Phillip Pi

Yeah. I even did a full uninstlal and reinstall and still got it and got
way more errors. Logs keep saying it wants to modify my CD's files! EH?!
I fixed it by copying the CD files to my HDD, point updater to go there,
and upgrade.

Doggone it, Ant, you were supposed to wait for me to reply with that
suggestion so *I* could be the hero!

<g> Here I was about to suggest just that and there in the next message
you'd gone and done it.

LOL! Sorry. Got too excited. ;)

Good thinking. Glad it worked for you.

Yeah, but still scratching my head WHY it wants to modify my CD-ROM
files!! Even uninstall, reinstall, and reupgrade didn't fix it. I guess
I will have to waste 650/700 MB on my HDD to keep Office 2000 updated. :(

Or copy the stuff there on an as-needed basis.

Yeah, but Office updates usually come once a month so... ;)

External HDD then?

Nah, it's on my D drive for now. Still puzzled why Office updates wants
to modify read only files. ;P

Me too. But y'know, now that it aint' quite so broke, we may not wanna fix it
any more.

Yeah. It seems like Office 2000 is really buggy in breaking down with
updates. I have seen something like this in my dad's old Windows 98 SE
laptop/notebook. Then, it refused to accept any updates at all to cause
a full uninstall and reinstall. :(

Ouch. Considering its age and that its supported service life is long past, I
wonder if MS tests the Office 2000 updates as thoroughly as it does the ones for
current versions. (I don't know one way or t'other)

Yeah. I haven't seen these problems with their newer versions like 2002+
on other PCs. I do remember seeing an old Windows 2000 SP4's Office
Update not working because of the OGA thing checker. :(
