Can't install SP2.

My computer spontaneously reboots during the installation of Service
Pack 2. It finishes checking the registry, installs up to about 30%,
then I get a really quick blue error screen (it flashes by too quickly
for me to see what the error is), and the computer reboots itself.

I've updated my drivers, ruled out any conflicting programs, and run
through any of the fixes that I could find for a computer spontaneously
rebooting during installation.

What else am I missing?

Have you updated your BIOS? There were tons (millions) of machines
shipped in 2004 that had an early Intel Prescott bios that was
incompatible with SP2.

And also make sure you unplug and external USB device while doing this.

AND/OR
try download to disk or create folder(name e.g. SP2Update) in root
drive(C:\) and download to desktop - or get the free disk - make sure
machine is 'clean' - disconnect from the net - remove all hardware except
keyboard, monitor and mouse - disable AntiV - move KB835935 to created
folder - go to 'Start/Run/Browse to the folder (SP2Update) - click on
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe - click open then OK.
It has worked for a some - you never know :)
The above is collated information to prepare for the upgrade of a friend's
computer regarding download and installation of SP2 - not all
ideas/suggestions are from a single source.
I acknowledge Mow Green in particular.

Hello jmw

Thank you - but I fear the poster's troubles may not be finished having
accomplished the SP2 install - they will then have the 50-60-70
critical/security updates to bring the system to current status + some non
critical stuff on offer.
Now those updates I will not be downloading and installing in one go - I
shall put them on my friends system a few at a time, in the order as shown
on the WU site, each one downloaded from their respective site page, to
disk/desktop, on a clean and disconnected from the web system.
Its Black Tuesday tomorrow - let the fun begin :-(

True and a better solution might be to Slipstream SP2 into the original disc
to avoid a lengthy download.

Hah. Nope. I bet that's the problem! Unfortunately, my A-drive hasn't
worked in...forever. So I can't make a disk to update my BIOS with. Ah
well. Thanks! :)

Floppy drives are dirt cheap.

Until next pay day, folks.. :(
