Can't install software after installing DVD writer

I installed a Sony DVD writer. When I tried to install the software CD an
error message came up stating that the setup file failed to initialize
properly. I have since discovered that I cannot install any program - the
same error message comes up. I have had 3 tech support sessions with Sony and
they believe that there is an issue with Windows XP that occurred when
Windows installed the DVD writer. They suggested that I update the
InstallShield program and also that I run an ASPI error fix utility. I have
done both but the problem still exists.
