Can't install SErvice Pack 1

I have tried several times to install SErvice Pack1. It always fails upon installation. I've even ordered the CD of Service Pack 1, and when I try to install that, it says that it has detected a later version of IE and it doesn't go any further. EVerytime I crash online, the error report says I need SErvice Pack1. Whenever I scan for updates and patches, it says I need Service Pack 1. IT's a vicious circle. The only thing that helps the crashing is when I restore my computer to an earlier date. This usually helps only for about 3-4 weeks, then it keeps crashing again.
Does anyone have a clue about this???? I'm about ready to reboot the whole system.
