I can't install Microsoft Photo Info 1.0. I get the following message:

"There is a problem with this installer package. A program run as part
of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel
or package vendor." Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to find out
which program didn't run correctly.

The vendor, of course, is Microsoft. This was a download from their site.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Ernie,

Close all running applications and run the installer again. If that does not help, try running it from Safe mode. To do that first you'll need to configure Windows to load the Windows installer service in Safe mode (normally, it doesn't start in Safe mode boot).

Here is how to do so: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895141
That article should apply to Windows XP, as well.

Before proceeding, perform the following:

1. Create a System Restore point.
2. Backup the entire registry using ERUNT (free)

And a direct answer from the Microsoft Photo Info FAQ page:

Microsoft Photo Info frequently asked questions:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/photoinfofaq.mspx

<excerpt>

Q.When I attempt to install Photo Info, I get a confusing message and the program is not installed. Why?
A.During Setup on Windows XP, Photo Info runs the Microsoft Windows Imaging Component (WIC) installer to ensure that WIC is present on the system. If the WIC installer fails for some reason, the following message is generated and Photo Info Setup is cancelled:
"There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A Program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

This may happen for a few reasons:

1) a very old beta copy of the Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.0 may be installed;
2) the WIC installer did not run with Administrator privileges;
3) the Windows registry is inaccessible for some reason. None of these cases should be common, and Microsoft is currently investigating this further. Should this happen, you can try installing WIC manually. Once this succeeds, try the Photo Info Setup again.

How do I install the WIC manually?

I don't think it's an old beta copy of .NET, because when I tried to
install Photo Info, it downloaded and installed .NET first. I have to
assume it was not an old beta copy.

And how can I tell if WIC did not run with Administrator privileges?

If your user account is of type administrator, the installer would have run with Administrator privileges.

Perhaps you can try installing WIC manually, as the FAQ solution suggests.

I did all that, and it still resulted in the same error message. I'm
planning to get a new computer (with Vista) in the summer, and I'll try
it again.

Notes/questions:

- I set up Windows to load the installer service in the safe mode (KB
3895141) in Administrator mode, tried the install after a normal reboot,
and then went back into Administrator/safe mode and deleted that
MSIServer key that I set up. I would think I'm back to "normal" now.
- I assume there's no need to run ERDNT, to restore the backup point
that I created with ERUNT.

Please let me know if I did anything wrong, especially the simple
deletion of the MSIServer key.

You may want to pass this on to the appropriate folks in Microsoft. If
none of this worked, there has to be a problem with the .msi file.

As you've correctly performed the "UNDO" steps, no need to use ERDNT now.

Just a thought. Why not post this in the windowsxp.photos newsgroup. There are some specialists in that group, on this topic.
