Can't install new software

When I attempt to install new software, using Windows XP,
I receive the following messages:

Cannot find shell.dll / close
System dlls corrput or missing / ok

The the installation process ends and I am returned to
the desktop.

What can I do to fix this problem and be able to install
new software?

You are a perfect candidate to use the System file checker. Start>run
type: sfc /scannow. Have the WinXP cd in the
cdrom drive.
