Can't insert headers

I'm trying to insert a header into a word document. I click on insert then
autotext but when I go to header/footer I get an empty box! Help!

This usually indicates that a file has been saved as normal.dot (which can
only be created by Word itself). You can rename the existing Normal template
and have Word generate a new one; this should fix the issue. See

how to locate normal.dot.
