Can't initialise any upgrades that are downloaded in Windows XP

I'm having trouble with downloading upgrades for programs such as
Virus checkng programs. I know there was a Windows XP program that
offers to install itself and becomes a controller for downloading
upgrades.

Any suggestions on what to try would be most welcome.

Thanks for your reply Dave.

I have an option to update my antivirus pattern file by clicking on
"update" which downloads the latest antivirus file from the internet.

After the file has been downloaded it then tries to install itself
I get the error message "The installation directory could not be
termined"

This use to work but has now stopped working.
I have tried a few other programs that offer to download update file
which self install but I get the same problem.

Hoping someone can help

Examine the messages (application, security and system) in the event
viewer for possible clues (eventvwr.msc from the RUN box)
Run chkdsk /f, and do a sweep for virus and spyware.

get a lot of spyware that needs weeding out every now and then.
