Can't increase my virtual memory.

I am facing a problem with my virtual memory. I usually have a lot of
programs running resulting in the increase of memory usage above 400mb almost
everytime.thus need to increase virtual memory from windows default.
But when I change it in my computer>properties>advanced>virtual
memory.....It prompts to restart the computer but even after restart the
virtual memory remains the same 370 mb. I have got more than 2GB of freespace
this time.

I have a WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION ( SERVICE PACK 2)
P4 HT 2.8 , 256 mb ram

After adjusting the settings, did you click the Set button? The
settings will not hold unless you do.

Also be sure you keep plenty of headroom to the Max value above the
Initial one. Read more background at www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

I did all pressed set and then properly clicked ok.
Even tried some good tricks that otherwise work ....
1. disable paging then delete pagefile.sys reboot and again set paging .
being one of the most effective even that didnt worked.

Had 2 gb is that drive at that time.
Tell me if you can
