can't import .pst file from outlook 2003 to vista mail

My system, purchases yesterday, Windows Vista "64bit"
Old system, Windows XP, Outlook 2003

Why can't I import my backup file into Vista Mail? This file is saved on my
desktop as a .pst file 544MB, however the thumbnail is a "blank page"
Properties says " Open with: Windows Shell Commor" ?

Seems Vista will not reconize the .pst file

Other Question, I read somewhere here to install OE 2003 but I don't have my
disks.

You have two choices: 1. Install Outlook, preferably version 2003 or
later,
under Vista. Versions 2000 and 2002 also run under Vista, but with some
problems. Windows Mail needs to use part of Outlook to be able to import
..pst files. For a free trial of some software packages, some of which
contain
Outlook, see here:

http://us1.trymicrosoftoffice.com/default.aspx?re_ms=oo&culture=en-US

The free trial versions last more than long enough to import the messages.

2. First, import the messages into Outlook Express on an older computer
that has both Outlook Express and Outlook. Then import the messages
from Outlook Express into Windows Mail:

<http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail>

After you copy the files to a directory on the hard drive of your new
computer,
make sure the copies are read-write instead of readonly before you import
them into Windows Mail.

No OS (including Vista) can recognize file types for which it doesn't
have a registered program installed. The .PST file is unique to
Outlook, so only Outlook can deal with it.
