I have a new Vista laptop that I installed Office XP on (Outlook 2002).
Now, I am using Windows Mail, and can't get it to import my folders and
messages from Outlook. Do you know how I can do this???
Thanks
Cliff

You need to make Outlook 2002 the default email client, then in Windows mail
do File-Import-Messages...
HTH

I too am having import messages issue with Windows Mail. The following
suggestion did not work for me.

I'm trying to import from MS Outlook 2000. Just got a new Vista Home
Premium (upgraded to SP1) computer and used a combo of Easy Transfer and Easy
Transfer Companion to move my settings, files and programs from my XP Home
system to the Vista system. I can run Outlook 2000 SP3 just fine (all but
the fax system... thank you Microsoft :( ). Just the same, Vista Windows
Mail and Calendar seem like a decent replacement for Outlook 2000. Easy
Transfer put all my contacts into Windows Mail, but no messages. When I try
to manually import messages into Windows Mail, it crashes. I get the
following message:

Windows Mail has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close
the program and notify you if a solution is available.

So using Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Application,
I see the following error:

Faulting application WinMail.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp
0x47918ed8, faulting module oeimport.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp
0x4791a747, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00009cad, process id
0xc14, application start time 0x01c890417513e050.

It doesn't matter how I set my default email client, etc. This error is
repeatable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

<sigh> why not? What happened when you tried it?

Do you have the option of importing the .pst file into Outlook Express on
a computer with Outlook and Outlook Express installed? If so, do that,
then import the messages from Outlook Express to Windows Mail.

<http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail>

If Outlook had any contacts other than what your old Outlook Express
setup had, bring along the .wab file. After you copy the files to a
directory
on the hard drive of your Vista computer, make sure they are all
read-write instead of readonly before you import them into Windows
Mail. To import the .wab file, click on Tools in the main Windows Mail
screen, then Windows Contacts, then Import, then Windows Address
Book (Outlook Express contacts), then Import, then find the .wab file
and click on it.

Windows Mail crashed as described in my post.

Thanks for the suggestions Robert.

The address book came over just fine into Windows Mail when I used Easy
Transfer, so that's not the problem. My XP Home computer does not have
Outlook Express installed. That seems to me one click of the mouse, so I'll
try that route and tell you what happened. It will probably be tomorrow.

Thanks again.

BTW, it looks to me like Windows Mail has a bug in the Outlook Import
function.

The bug in the Outlook Import function seems to be that it forgets to tell
you that Outlook, or some other MAPI provider, must be installed before
this function will work.

Outlook Express is available for XP, and I believe XP comes with a
version of Outlook Express You may want to ask in the following
newsgroup where to find the latest version, though:

Hi,

Windows Mail Outlook Import function has more bugs than that. Going
belly-up with only a 0xc... log error is a bit worse than forgetting to tell
me a MAPI provided is needed. So I switched my Outlook to Corporate or
Workgroup mode to enable Outlook 2000's MAPI function, and at least then I
got Windows Mail to tell me it can't import Outlook messages.

It's easier than that. All you need do is click the Outlook Express
checkbox in Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows
Components. Windows XP does not ask for any systems disks. XP just turns
on OE. OE imported the Outlook 2000 messages just fine, I copied the
identity folder to the Vista machine and Windows Mail imported the OE6
message store folder also without a hitch. So it was harder than it maybe
should have been, but I think I'm good to go.

Thanks everyone for your help.
