Can't get to desktop or run in safe mode!

Using XP Home Edition, we suddenly can't get much past
the Windows startup logo after rebooting. We will
momentarily get our wallpaper but no icons, then it goes
to a logon screen requiring a password (we never had a
password before and can't logon without one now! ).
Also, if we try to boot in safemode nothing happens at all.

Any ideas, or is this a complete re-install?

Actually I might have mis-stated that part. Hitting the F-
key no longer brings up the option to get into safe mode.
So we can't even choose that option.
