Can't get to any secure site

My daughter is home from college after her first semester away. She
complains that she has to borrow someone else's computer if she wants to
check her e-mail at school. I picked up her laptop this evening and
discovered that, with her computer, I couldn't check my e-mail from the
Adelphia web site either. Then I tried checking my account at my bank.
That doesn't work either.
Any site that requires you to log in, doesn't work. It goes to a page
with something about a 400 error and it tries to do a search instead of
going to the page.
That's all I know right now but she's home for a while. I can find out
what else you might need to know to figure out this problem. Thanks for
any suggestions.

What make and model is her machine? Operation system? Is it's operating
system up to date with microsoft updates? Clear the browser cache and try
again. Check for updates

you ran virus and spyware checks on it? Are there any error messages in the
event viewer logs? Are you running a third party firewall on it. Norton
sometimes causes this. Check cipher strength of browser. On menu bar select
help/internet explorer. It should show cipher strength to be 128. You might
have to reinstall the Browser.

Well, I'm done for tonight. I decided to start by following the steps in
the support web site below. I got down to trying system restore and went
back to a date before the problem started. Naturally, it logged off and
restarted. I don't know her password and she's at another house watching
a movie with friends. I'll get back to it tomorrow and see where we stand.

address? It wasn't my idea, and I don't see any other posters with this
made up address. When I first posted, I tried changing it to my real
return address and it wouldn't send.

I'm not sure how you're reading news, but normally with a newsreader you
set your own reply address. In any case, you *don't* want to put your
real unmunged email address in postings on Usenet or messageboards. It
will get harvested by spambots. Here's a link explaining about munging:

newsgroups in case you aren't doing this already. There are many good
newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook Express since you
already have it.

I came back. It took me two weeks to get back to working on the problem.
When I last wrote, I was working my way down the list of things to check
on the web site "S. Sengupta" posted. When I got to the system restore
section, I had to restart the computer to find out if it helped. I
didn't have her password to log back on.
Now she's off to NY city with a group of friends and I had her take away
the password so I could work on it. The very next item on the list was
to check the virus protection. That didn't seem likely but I looked into
it anyway. She uses Norton. I wondered if I could just turn it off for a
few minutes and see what happens. I never found how to turn it off but
in my looking, I found a warning that "internet security" was turned
off. I couldn't make it turn back on. I tried to update Norton and
nothing worked. (by the way, windows update didn't function during these
past weeks either) Finally, I found that the live update button on the
internet security window would work. After I did that, internet security
could be turned on. After that, I could go to Adelphia.net and actually
log on and check my e-mail there. I also could do a windows update.
My daughter will be home Wednesday night. If she still can't get to the
sites that gave her trouble, I'll start a new thread and start again but
I'm almost certain that I'm done.
