I've tried several times to install a gps map progam on my desktop with no
success. I finally gave up and put it on my laptop which worked ok. I would
still like to install it on my desktop if I can figure out how. Both
computers are running XP os. It takes 6 cd's for the installation.
Everything seems to be ok until the installation is complete. Then when I
restart the desktop and Windows comes up I get errors. There are about 5
error windows that come up. When I close one the next one comes up. They
all say: "This application has failed to start because MSVCRT71.DLL was not
found. Re-installating the application may fix the problem." I didn't have
an MSVCRT71.DLL before or after the installation. The headings on the error
windows are: YMETRAY.EXE, ccApp.EXE, Readr_SL.EXE and 2 windows that are
Retrorun.exe. I've disabled my Norton anti-virus and Internet Security and
I've exited everything in the tray but nothing helped. I have no other
applications running. I have a lot of processes running but I'm not sure
which ones I can stop during the installation. Each time I attempt an
install I create a new Restore Point and I've had to use these to get the
system running again. Before I do a System Restore I can't get on the
internet and some other programs don't work. Can anyone tell me which
processes I can safely stop?......or would that help?

Stop/start system processes is not the answer, click on event viewer, for
a event/warning click on the url within, this opens kb help/support in xp,
usually with a fix..

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the event viewer and there were some
warnings that had to do with logging off after the software was installed and
the computer was restarted. I clicked on the url in th event viewer and
there was nothing that helped fix the problem. I didn't see any event
warnings that happened during the install. In the original post I said that
MSVCRT71.DLL was not found. It should have been MSVCR71.DLL and it is found
before and after the install.
