Cant get my mail to open the right pst file

My outlook finds but will not accept the location of my pst folders.

No matter what I do

Tools
Email Accounts
View or change existing email accounts
New Outlook Data File
Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)

I cannot change the default path from the usual C:\Documents and
Settings\local user local settings\ application data etc.

My mail and all my documents are on a separate hard drive so I can access
them when my computer is in the shop.

What are the registry edit settings (I know what my path is) but don't know
which key to edit.

Thanks
I have already tried fix and repair several times and I have also tried to
restore system to earlier settings - neither of these do what I need

What do you show under File->Data File Management for .pst files? Can you
open them using File->Open->Outlook Data File?
