Can't Get many of my Windows XP Programs to Run

I have been using Windows XP for Home on my Dell Inspiron 8200 Lap Top since I purchased it in August, 2002. Approx. 3 - 4 months ago, I started having problems with the following programs running:

Desktop Items Not working
- Recycle Bin
- "Classes" (created folder)
- "Screen Savers" (created folder)
- Internet Explorer
- "Unused Desktop Shortcuts"

Programs Menu Items Not Working
- My Documents
- My Pictures
- My Music
- My Computer
- My Network Places
- Control Panel

I tried loading the OS in the "Dianostic Startup" and even with very few processes running, I still have this problem.
My Virus protection is up to date.
I have run Ad-aware recently.

Does anyone know what my be causing this?

Thanks!!

Have you run applications like Spybot Search and Destroy or Pest Patrol?
Have you run Windows Update recently? Can you open any of those menu items
you list below like the My Documents folder from Windows Explorer? Have you
ever reformatted and reinstalled XP? Would you consider reformatting and
reinstalling XP?
