can't get into bios

I need to get into BIOS to check what version it is and
as soon as the red Compaq logo comes up I press F1, but
XP just starts anyway. How do I get into BIOS.

Keep clicking F1 as soon as the boot starts or check your handbook - you can
also watch carefully at the start of booting for the words ...to enter
setup. Not all PCs are the same. On mine I have to press 'Delete'

Another option:
Go to www.aida32.hu , download AIDA32, Enterprise version. It's free, and
will tell you your BIOS version plus a ton of other info.
