Can't get full screen mode

I have just acquired a Xeon machine with an ATI GL4 video
accelerator but when I try to load any games I either get
a message saying another application is perventing the use
of full screen mode or the game crashes.

I have made sure no other applications are open and all
non essential processes are closed but to no avail.

Any ideas?
 
Do you have the latest video card drivers for the machine?
