I've opened a port for tcp and udp; and listed messenger as a
firewall exception in xp pro sp2. But I still can't receive files.
Obviously I'm an idiot.
Can anybody help please?

Are you behind a router/gateway?

yes.I'm on a Demon NAT adsl service.

You have to port forward ports on the router not your firewall. Look in your
router manual to configure this.

Also, Windows Messenger Help says you need to forward ports 6890-6900.
You can also go to the MSN Messenger web page to find out more about instant
messaging. Scott.
