Can't find previous saved patches

I'm having a lot of trouble with my computer freezing (if that's the right word) so I have to pres Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open up the Task manager. If I then close the Task manager the system then works again for a few more minutes. I tried downloading any critical patches but MS states that it can't find a record of previous saved patches.

I use Norton so son't think its a virus problem. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Don't depend on Norton alone. Run the cleaners mentioned here, then repost
if the behavior continues:
