Can't find HAL.DLL at bootup

I get the error message telling me to reload a copy of
HAL.DLL to the hard drive in order for XP to continue to
boot. The problem is the hard drive isn't accessable
because the missing file is the one that allows access to
the hard drive. The drive is listed in the BIOS , recovery
cd's do not work, Norton Utilities recovery routines do
not work... Where do I go from here?
 
Did a search of my hard drive and found 3 instances of the dll and all 3
were different sizes. Once instance was in the i386 directory.

Tis why its recommended NOT to use dupliclate .dll finders/deleters.
