Can't find Favorites

It was taking 10+ hours to run a virus scan on my wife's computer. I looked
into this and found it was scanning over 1,300,000 files! I found that
there were close to a 1,000,000 files in the Temporary Internet Files
folder. On the General Tab for Internet Options, I reduced the amount of
disk space for these files to 10MB and clicked on "Delete Files" under
Temporary Internet Files

Need less to say it took a while to delete. After this operation when we
went to look at Favorites, we got a blank screen. No folders were shown.
If I try to create a new bookmark and click on "Create In" I am shown the
list of folders that was there before. If I try to bookmark a page that was
in one of these folders anew, I get a message that the bookmark exists.

How do I get the original list of bookmarks back. Help! I am really in the
dog house here!

Favourites are stored in a folder: Documents and
Settings\<username>\Favourites. You can copy the contents elsewhere and
import them, or try recovery tools to undelete its contents. You might try
moving the contents, which will empty the list, and then import.
