Can't end highlighting

For unknown reasons, my excel sheet will start to highlight cells. If I move
my mouse in any direction, that group of cells will be added to or subtracted
from the cells selected. I can easily find the main cell where the problem
starts, but I can't get it to quit without hard booting my computer. What is
causing this? MS Excel 2003.

Perhaps you're in extended mode (you might have accidentally hit F8 key
earlier). "EXT" shows on status bar if you're in extended mode. Try hitting
F8 key once to toggle off extended mode.
