Can't enable XP firewall anymore.

I connect to the internet through a hub (I know it's not
the best way, but it's always worked before) and usually
just turn off the firewalls on my computers if I want to
share any files. I've done things this way for quite some
time now. But last night I wasn't able to turn the
firewall back onto my desktop PC for some reason. Error
message "An error occurred while Internet Connection
Sharing was being enabled. The dependecy service or group
failed to start" is displayed. I've tried uninstalling
and reinstalling my network adapter, but that did
nothing. I've ran Network Setup Wizard and tried to keep
Internet Connection Sharing off, but that didn't help
either. How can I get my firewall back up?

Keith, go to services and check if the Firewall service
is started. Start - Run & type services.msc from the
list select Internet Connection - double click and check
if the startup type is Automatic & the Service Status is
Started.

Definitely. Actually if you get it figured out first
here's my regular email address: (e-mail address removed) . So
do you even have any options/abilities to turn ICS on or
off? I don't even have a sharing Tab in my connections
menu like most articles I've read refer to. Very strange.
Anyway, feel free to write me if you find the answer.
I'll keep looking too.

Thanks for the very helpful info! Well, when I try to
Start the service I get the same error message saying the
dependency group failed. I noticed Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) is listed in the dependency group and I've seen
that listed in other error messages. I'm also unable to
do any system restores. Think these are tied in together?
This all started when I did a Windows XP "Repair" as
opposed to a new Install of the operating system. Thanks
again for your help.

Yes, I did the same thing last night with the same
result. Problem solved. Glad it workd for you, too.
Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

Yes, I reinstalled SP1 last night and everything works
now. I didn't realize how important the Service Pack is!
Thank you very much for your help. I was getting very
frustrated trying to fix it on my own and asking for help
was the best thing I did. I'll have to use these
newsgroups more often in the future. Thanks again!

And don't forget to get updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com, lots of
important stuff there too.
