Can't email, get error "550 permit denied" message.

I'm using a few email addresses I've used for years, but suddenly I can't
send email to those addresses (msn.com and yahoo.com). I get:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

(I deleted my friend's name here) on 10/19/2005 9:28 AM
550 permit denied

What does that mean?

Did you change anything recently (ISPs, server names, etc). Typically 550
errors are caused by SMTP (outgoing) mail servers rejecting mail for a
number of reasons (off network senders, etc)

I haven't changed anything that I know of - could I have changed something
without realizing it?

Possibly but not likely...

What outgoing mail server are you using?

I am also getting the same error. But I am replying to an email that I just
received.
The actual error is
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server. The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject
'this is a test and only a test from XXXXX's better half!!!', Account:
'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '550 permit denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550,
Error Number: 0x800CCC79

I can send to other addresses but NOTHING from hotmail.com gets sent.

The cause of this error is due to the fact that all our SMTP servers require authentication. Please consult the "SMTP authentication settings" and "special settings for MSN, AT&T, AOL.com or Cox.com users
